What Is Vascular Surgery?

Vascular surgery is a type of surgery in which diseases of the circulatory system are diagnosed and managed. Treatment of vascular disease should be recommended and performed only by a board-certified vascular surgeon specializing in the treatment of the diseases of arteries and veins.

Treatment can include a number of different methods, depending on the severity of the disease, including:
  • Medical therapy
  • Minimally-invasive catheter procedures
  • Surgical reconstruction

How Do I Know if I Need Vascular Surgery?

If you are experiencing pain in your legs, redness after standing for long periods or poor circulation, you may be suffering from a vascular condition. It is strongly recommended that candidates for vascular surgery should quit smoking before their procedure.

When you arrive for your appointment at Atlanta Vascular Specialists, your physician will evaluate your condition and health history to determine if vascular surgery is the right option for you.

Types of Vascular Diseases

Effective Treatments for Vascular Disease

Our compassionate doctors and staff members at Atlanta Vascular Specialists are committed to supporting and treating our patients in a comforting, caring environment.

Many of our treatments are minimally invasive. Our surgeons also perform outpatient angioplasty and stenting for arterial circulation problems. In-office procedures are available for the treatment of venous disease. For example, radiofrequency ablation can help alleviate the swelling, discomfort and appearance of varicose veins. This procedure only takes approximately 30 minutes and involves minimal discomfort, allowing you to return to your everyday routine after just a day.

At Atlanta Vascular Specialists, we are experienced and qualified to treat every kind of vascular disease or complication with arteries, veins and blood flow in the human body. Our board-certified vascular surgeons can consult with you on any issue you may be at risk for due to age, a history of smoking, diabetes and more.

For patients suffering from kidney failure, we can also provide access to Hemodialysis.

Unhealthy veins and vascular disease can lead to a number of health problems. Some of the most common complications and health issues resulting from vascular diseases are Aortic Aneurysms, Carotid Artery Disease, and Peripheral Arterial Disease. Here is some helpful information regarding each of these vein related problems.

Treatment Options for Vein Conditions

Our vein treatment options include:
  • Ablation
  • Angioplasty
  • Bypass surgery
  • Endovascular
  • Foam ablations
  • Microphlebectomy
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Sclerotherapy injections (treatment for spider veins)
  • Varithena
  • Vascular
  • Venaseal (adhesive that glues the wall of the vessel together)

Our Available Vein Services

  • FREE vein consultation: A certified vascular surgeon will discuss with you, your symptoms, the effects on your daily living, and the types of treatment available.
  • Microphlebectomy: It is used primarily to remove large, unsightly varicose veins and is another minimally-invasive, non-surgical process. It is less invasive and results in quicker healing and less discomfort than other options. The treatment takes about an hour.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation: Radiofrequency Ablation is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedure. A microscopic probe is inserted into the saphenous vein to emit pulses of heat using radiofrequency waves. It redirects blood flow to healthier veins and is safe.
  • Support hose: It is specialized hosiery designed to slow down the development and further progression of varicose veins and is also called "compression hose." It is used to reduce swelling and other symptoms and is an integral part of vein care. They can slow the development but can't prevent varicose veins from occurring.
  • Varithena: One of the most advanced treatments used to treat varicose veins caused by issues related to the great saphenous vein is Varithena. Small doses of the prescription foam are injected and scar the walls of the vessel, closing it and relieving swelling and pain.
  • Vascular ultrasound: It is used by our certified vein specialists to diagnose various vein diseases. You get a visual representation of the blood vessels including, arteries and veins using this non-invasive, painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves.
  • Sclerotherapy: This is a minimally invasive procedure that treats spider veins and some larger veins. A chemical is injected into the damaged veins. This chemical is called a sclerosing agent. This injection diminishes the appearance of the damaged veins.
  • VenaSeal™: Ask us about this revolutionary new system that delivers a unique formulated medical adhesive that closes the damaged vein so blood can be rerouted to healthier veins close by. There's only one stick of local anesthetic, and there's no compression stockings needed afterwards.

Learn More About Vascular Ultrasounds

A vascular ultrasound is a vital tool in detecting and diagnosing blood vessel problems. This test is a useful way of evaluating the body’s circulatory system. Your ultrasound results also will show blood flowing through the arteries and veins.

Your visit to our vascular lab at AVS will consist of a non-invasive ultrasound exam. This means that the procedure does not require needles, dyes radiation, or anesthesia.

One of our qualified technicians will start the procedure by applying a hypoallergenic water-based gel to the area that will be evaluated. Then, a small microphone-like device called a "transducer" will pass over the gel-coated area.

Upon the completion of the exam, the physician reviews, interprets and dictates all the images and measurements of the blood flow. Afterward, a letter explaining the results will be forwarded to you and/or your referring physicians.

You should wear comfortable clothing to your appointment to make the ultrasound examination as hassle-free as possible. You may be given a covering and asked to undress from the waist up or down. Also, keep in mind there is no special preparation for most exams, except for an abdominal vascular ultrasound, which requires patients to fast for up to six hours before the exam.

For registration purposes, please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Most exams take 20-60 minutes to complete. After the exam, you may resume your normal daily activities.

Vascular ultrasounds are performed to:
  • Help to monitor the blood flow to various organs and tissues throughout the body
  • Locate and identify blockages (stenosis) and abnormalities, such as plaque, and help plan an effective treatment
  • Detect blood clots deep vein thrombosis-DVT in the legs or arms
  • Determine if a patient is a good candidate for certain procedures, such as angioplasty or endovascular repair
  • Evaluate the success of procedures that involve grafting or bypassing blood vessels
  • Determine if there is an enlarged artery, commonly known as an aneurysm
  • Determine the source and severity of varicose veins
  • Determine hemodialysis access

Sclerotherapy for Spider and Larger Veins

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that treats spider veins and some larger veins. A chemical is injected into the damaged veins. This chemical is called a sclerosing agent. This injection diminishes the appearance of the damaged veins.

A tiny needle is inserted in the damaged vein and the chemical is injected. A blanching effect can take place where the vein disappears for a few seconds. It returns angry and red and will overtime fade making it less visible as the body absorbs the vein. The liquid or foam causes the walls of the vein to seal shut, so blood is redirected to unaffected veins.

This sclerotherapy takes place in sessions and may take more than one session to complete treatment.
